Broadhead Arrow Points
Some of the most penetrating arrows are tipped with broadhead arrow points. There are a number of different types of broadheads to choose from, each of them designed to get much greater penetration and producing more stopping power.
For some the choice will come down to a decision between a mechanical broadhead and a fixed blade broadhead. The risk when using the mechanicals is in the deployment of the blades on impact. The fact that there are moving parts involved means that there is a chance the blades will either deploy too early or, in some cases, not at all. This will affect the flight of the arrow, its accuracy and the penetration that it will achieve.
You will want to buy broadheads that ensure a humane kill with a significant blood trail to enable the animal to be easily found after it has moved off. When using some of these broadheads that blood trail is not going to have to be very long because, with some, the animal is not going to be moving very far.

Don't forget that by adding a broadhead arrow point to the end of your arrow you are increasing the dynamics of the arrow. It's like putting fletchings on the front of the arrow and so its flight will be affected. You will have to re-tune your bow so that the flight of the arrow is still consistent. The angle that the arrow is fired at will be the direction that it will want to fly so ensure that the broadhead is aligned perfectly when setting up to fire.
Types of Broadheads
There are essentially two different types of broadheads that are used by hunters: fixed blade and mechanical blade. The one that is best for you is going to depend on many factors, the most compelling of these factors comes down to our personal preference and how comfortable you are when making your shot.
Fixed blade broadheads are pretty easy to categorize and look exactly as their name suggests with blades that are fixed in place. These types of broadheads feature from 2 to 4 blades and are attached to the ferrule so they are solidly in place. The blades of some types of fixed blade broadheads may be removed and replaced if they become damaged. There are other types that are constructed as a solid piece of metal and can be resharpened after use.
The more complex type of broadheads are the mechanical broadheads, sometimes referred to as expandable broadheads, and they are designed with the blades that are stored flat against the shaft of the arrow and then spring open upon impact with a target. The purpose of this design is to allow the arrow to fly as accurately as possible before creating a sizable cutting diameter to produce a devastating wound channel and entry and exit hole.
Although there are essentially only the two different types of broadhead styles there are many variations in the way they are made and in the way they work. The materials used, the weight of the broadhead, the angle of the cutting blades, the type of arrow tip, the cutting diameter and the number of blades all provide crucial points of difference for the hunter to decide on.
