Types of String Silencers

There are many different types of string silencers made from a range of different materials, all of them designed to muffle or absorb the sound of the string snapping back into place. Thin strips of fleece that may be attached to the bow string to quickly calm the string. Among the many brands of material-based silencers are brands such as Bateman Puff Silencers and the ever-popular rubber material of the Cat Whiskers. There is an obvious advantage with the fleece silencers and that is the price. They do the job well and they are quite inexpensive. However, the downside with using them is that they're not particularly durable so you're going to go through a few of them over the course of the season.

Alternatively the string might be quietened by pieces of plastic that clip in place to perform the same job. The most widely used examples of these types of silencers are the very popular Bowjax string silencers.

The Bowjax silencers are obviously going to provide additional durability and they also perform their role admirably. They cost a little more but are still considered a cheap option. They will also last longer than the fleece-based silencers but they weigh just a little more and require a bowpress for installation.

Apart from the examples that attach directly to the string, there are other string silencers that are attached to the riser. These silencers perform their role by effectively calming the string’s vibrations through friction by gently rubbing against the string as it moves back to its starting position. These types of silencers are larger and more substantial than the string applied silencers and they also cost more.

Examples of these larger, more expensive string silencers include the range of Falcon string silencers such as the Falcon Rattler string silencers. When you're paying around $25 or more for a silencer you expect it to provide you with a reliable product that will continue to work over the longer term and this is what the riser-attached silencers will provide. Although they will add more weight to the bow, they will also give you a noise solution that will continue to perform season after season.

The Best String Silencers

The question of what is the best string silencer for a compound bow is going to be a matter of personal preference for many. Some people can’t stand the look of a Cat Whisker on their bow because of the shaggy, dancing pieces that are perceived to take away the professional look of the rig. Others attempt to minimize the weight of their compound bow and regard the inclusion of a large silencer a weight impost they simply can’t afford. You will have to balance up the cost of the silencers, the weight you are prepared to carry and the longevity that you expect the silencer to have before you make your final decision.

A good way of working out which string silencers perform their job the best it is to visit some online archery forums. The question about string silencers comes up quite often and people are happy to pass on their favorite pieces of equipment. Of course, you’re going to be inundated with different types.

Here are four of the more popular types of silencers that have been recommended by regular hunters.

Cat Whiskers – by far the most popular and most recommended.
Everlast String Leeches
Monkey Tails
